Despite an outcry over noise and air pollution from residents of Memphis and nearby communities in northern Mississippi, regulators recently granted an air permit for Elon Musk’s xAI natural gas-fired power plant.
According to CNBC, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality approved the permit for an xAI subsidiary to install 41 natural gas-fired turbines in the town of Southaven, south off Memphis, to power its nearby data centers. xAI has installed two massive supercomputers, both named Colossus, to train its Grok AI model and is planning to install a third facility named “Macrohardrr.”
The permit came even after hundreds of residents packed a Feb. 17 hearing to share concerns of spiking air pollution from other turbines xAI had installed near its sites, many of them operated illegally without air permits. Residents also complained of noise and threats to the local water supply from the facilities’ water use.
