A company plans to drill six wells to store carbon dioxide (CO2) a few miles off the coast of Cameron Parish, Louisiana.
On Dec. 18, OnstreamCO2 applied for permits for the six wells to store up to 9 million metric tons of CO2 per year from industries in the area, including the proposed Commonwealth LNG terminal, also in Cameron Parish. The proposed project is known as the Cameron Parish CO2 Hub, though OnstreamCO2 calls it the GeoDura Storage Hub.
Such wells are meant to keep CO2 out of the atmosphere to avoid warming the climate. However, the technology has not been proven to be financially viable and is highly dependent on taxpayer subsidies. In November, OnstreamCO2 announced it had received a $26 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for the Cameron Parish CO2 Hub.
