White House plans to weaken fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks

Executives from Ford, GM and Stellantis joined President Donald Trump at a White House event Wednesday announcing plans to weaken Biden-era efficiency standards.

A rule finalized in June 2024 required new cars and trucks sold in the U.S. to get more than 50 miles per gallon on average in 2031. The Trump Administration has proposed lowering that to 34.5 miles per gallon.

New vehicles sold in 2024 averaged 28 miles per gallon, according to an EPA estimate.

Trumps “Big, Beautiful” bill signed into law in July had already cut financial penalties for auto companies that do not meet corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards, according to the Washington Post.
