Well that spewed oil into Louisiana marsh for a week to be sealed

The owner of an 82-year-old oil well that sprayed oily water into a Louisiana coastal marsh will permanently seal the structure.

The well in Garden Island Bay, a coastal marsh in Plaquemines Parish, released a mixture of oil and water for roughly a week starting last month, according to NOLA.com. The well is one of thousands of old oil and gas wells drilled across the state over a century of oil and gas production.

The well, located in the Pass-a-Loutre State Wildlife Management Area near the mouth of the Mississippi River, had changed hands multiple times and is currently owned by a company called Spectrum OpCo LLC. The well was capped a decade ago with the potential to someday restart production, according to the news outlet.
