The U.S. seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, President Donald Trump said Wednesday amid the administration’s escalation against the country’s president.
Trump made the comment about taking the oil tanker bound for Cuba during a roundtable meeting at the White House on Wednesday. Bloomberg News was the first to report Trump’s comments.
"As you probably know, we've just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela, a large tanker, very large," Trump said. "Largest one ever seized, actually.”
The administration has for months been using the military to attack boats alleged to be carrying drugs in the Caribbean and Pacific, as the administration rachets up conflict with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
The oil tanker is part of a class of ships known as Very Large Crude Carrier, Axios reported. The U.S. has for years sanctioned shipments of oil from Venezuela, which hold’s the world’s largest proven oil reserves.
