A top U.S. energy official said at a Houston event this week that the U.S. is currently receiving more than 500,000 barrel per day of oil from the South American country.
Following the U.S.’s capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January, the U.S. has been importing about half of the country’s production of 1.25 million barrels per day, U.S. Energy Under Secretary Kyle Haustveit said, according to Reuters.
The heavy, high-sulfur crude from Venezuela has helped fill a supply gap caused by the U.S’s. and Israel’s war with Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
