Growing natural gas production in the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico helped the U.S. set a new record last year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Natural gas production in 2025 grew by about 5 percent, or 5.3 billion cubic feet per day, to average 118.5 billion cubic feet per day, according to the EIA. Production in the Permian region rose by 11 percent, or 2.7 billion cubic feet per day, more than any other region, as companies produced more gas from wells targeting oil.
However, the region with the most natural gas production in the U.S. is Appalachia, comprised of parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and New York. The region was responsible for 31 percent of total gas production last year.
Production increased by about 1.1 billion cubic feet per day last year, a result of the Mountain Valley Pipeline that began operations in June 2024, combined with higher natural gas prices in 2025 compared to 2024, according to the EIA.
