U.S. exported 30 percent of energy produced in 2024

Nearly a third of the energy produced domestically last year was shipped abroad, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Of the crude oil and other liquid fuels derived from oil and gas the U.S. produced in 2024, 55 percent went to overseas buyers, mostly in Europe and Asia, according to the EIA. This was largely a result of a removal on the crude export ban in 2016, increasing global demand, and Europe’s ban on Russian oil and gas in 2022 in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Last year, the U.S. exported about 20 percent of its production of “dry” natural gas – the kind burned to heat homes and fuel power plants. Most of these exports also went to Europe and Asia.
