U.S. crude oil reserves hit 40-year low as Iran war drags on

As the Iran war continues and the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked, the U.S. government’s stockpile of crude oil reached its lowest level in four decades.

With the U.S. leading a coordinated release of crude oil reserves to address skyrocketing global oil prices, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve reached a 357.1 million barrels the week ending May 29, the lowest since it first began being filled in the early 1980s, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Total U.S. crude oil reserves – including both government and commercial stocks – dropped to 709.8 million barrels, a decline of about 16 million barrels from 878 million barrels in early April, according to Yahoo Finance. Reuters reported that crude inventories have declined by 63.9 million barrels since the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.
