The Trump Administration is considering allowing new oil leasing off the California coast for the first time since the 1980s, according to the Washington Post.
According to a draft map shared with the news outlet, the administration will likely propose six offshore lease sales along the California coast between 2027 and 2030.
The administration is also considering allowing drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, an area closed to oil and gas production out of concerns for military readiness and opposition from Florida communities worried about oil spills and loss of tourism revenue.
The administration is also considering 20 offshore lease sales through 2031 off the coast of Alaska, including in areas of the Arctic Ocean that have never been drilled before.
