Last week, President-elect Donald Trump announced the nomination of Chris Wright, CEO of oil services company Liberty Energy, to serve as the next administration's Secretary of Energy.
Wright is a major Trump donor who heads a Denver-based, publicly-traded company that specializes in hydraulic fracturing, truck fleet fueling, and mining of sand used for fracking, among other oilfield services.
Wright has said "there is no climate crisis" and attacked green energy policies, describing them in a February 2023 podcast interview as a “giant money suck for wealthy companies that are going to get all sorts of crazy subsidies.” Wright’s company’s stock price rose Monday after Trump announced his nomination.
If confirmed by the Senate, Wright would head the federal agency most in charge of overseeing grants and loans for technologies like carbon capture and sequestration, many of which were a key feature of Biden’s signature climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act.
Wright would also serve on the National Energy Council, a new organization that would consist of federal agencies involved in regulating and overseeing the country’s energy systems. Trump’s pick for Interior Secretary, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, would serve as chair.
