Trump officials considering creating oil reserve in California

Energy Secretary Chris Wright confirmed to Politico last week that the Trump Administration is considering a plan to create a strategic petroleum reserve on the West Coast.

Following a tour of oil facilities in Santa Barbara County, Wright said discussions to create such a reserve are underway between the administration and Sable Offshore Corp., which recently received help from the administration to restart an oil pipeline a decade after a massive spill that fouled local beaches.

Politico reported on a June 2 document that Sable lawyers had sent to the Energy Department proposing a West Coast Strategic Petroleum Reserve “in response to the inquiries made by the Trump administration and in the furtherance of Sable’s ongoing discussions with the Department of War for the supply of oil and gas to California.”

California has relatively few oil pipelines connecting the state the to rest of the U.S. Because of that isolation, along with state taxes and fees and environmental requirements, California residents pay the highest fuel prices in the country, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. However, the state also has largely embraced aggressive clean energy goals to reduce air and climate pollution and avoid dependence on fossil fuels.

The U.S.’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve stores crude oil in salt caverns in four major storage facilities along the Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisiana, according to the Energy Department.
