Texas school district sued for actions on tax breaks for ExxonMobil plastics plant

An environmental group sued a Texas school district over requirements to notify the public about its negotiations over tax breaks for one of the world’s largest oil companies.

The lawsuit, filed in May by the San Antonio Bay Estuarine Waterkeeper, states that Calhoun County Independent School District did not abide by state laws requiring 15 days’ notice and publicly accessible posting of an April 29 meeting to consider tax incentive proposal, Inside Climate News reported.

The school board at the meeting approved moving forward on ExxonMobil’s application to cut school district taxes by 50 percent to build a proposed plastics manufacturing facility in Calhoun County.

ExxonMobil’s Coastal Plain project would be located just across a highway from a massive Formosa plastics plant in Point Comfort responsible for years of air and water pollution violations.
