Tallgrass applies for permit for carbon injection well in western Nebraska

A company that operates natural gas and oil pipelines spanning multiple states is seeking a permit to store carbon dioxide (CO2) at a site in western Nebraska.

On Aug. 30, 2024, Tallgrass Energy applied for a permit to operate a CO2 injection well at the proposed High Plains Carbon Storage site in Kimball County, Nebraska. Such wells are intended to permanently store CO2 underground and prevent it from reaching the atmosphere and contributing to climate change.

The company is also planning to convert part of its Trailblazer natural gas pipeline to transport CO2 from ethanol plants and other CO2 producers in Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming for sequestration at the either High Plains site or its proposed Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub in Laramie County, Wyoming.
