A subsidiary of Japan’s largest power generation company will host meetings next week on a floating liquified natural gas storage facility to supply fuel for a planned power plant on O’ahu.

JERA Americas will hold public hearings Aug. 3 and 5 on its proposed Longboard LNG facilities and pipeline in Honolulu County. This project would entail building a new LNG floating storage where LNG could be off-loaded from ships and a unit to convert it from liquid to gas. The facilities would also include a 3-mile subsea pipeline to transport the gas onshore to O'ahu, where the company is planning a 500-megawatt power plant.

JERA is proposing to create a new power-producing utility on O’ahu, where residents pay some of the highest electricity rates in the U.S., according to Honolulu Civil Beat. Hawaiian Electric Co., the island’s only electric utility, opposes the move and filed a request with regulators to instead put out a bid for 500 megawatts of electricity produced by power plants, the outlet reported.
