State regulators will hold a public hearing on a draft air permit proposed for a massive gas-fired power plant that will power an AI data center complex in the Texas Panhandle.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) proposed a draft air permit for a gas-fired power plant capable of generating approximately 6,000 megawatts of electricity. The plant is part of Fermi America’s proposal for what it has called the “President Donald J. Trump Advanced Energy and Intelligence Campus.”
Fermi America is also proposing four nuclear reactors at its “hypergrid” site, with nuclear, solar, and natural gas-fired power generation adding up to 11 gigawatts, enough electricity to power Manhattan. Most of the generation would solely feed the data centers and not provide power for the public electrical grid.
Fermi America’s co-founders include former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Trump’s Energy Secretary during his first term. Its plans for the power plant complex and 18-million-square-foot data center campus have led to concerns about where it would source enough water to cool the facilities in a drought-prone region with dwindling groundwater that is vital to farmers and ranchers.
The hearing will be at 7 p.m. on Dec. 4 at the Carson County War Memorial located at 500 Main Street in Panhandle, Texas 79068. TCEQ is also accepting comments on the draft permit until at least Dec. 4.
