The developer of a proposed natural gas export terminal on the southern tip of Texas is abandoning its plans to capture the facility’s carbon dioxide emissions.
On August 20, 2024, Rio Grande LNG submitted a request to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to withdraw its application to construct a carbon capture and sequestration project at the proposed Rio Grande LNG Terminal. The company had initially claimed that the project would reduce the terminal’s greenhouse gas emissions by 94 percent, reducing the terminal’s impact on the climate.
Earlier this month, a Washington, D.C., appeals court ruled against Rio Grande LNG after a challenge by environmental groups, residents, and the nearby City of Port Isabel. The ruling sent the terminal’s authorization back to FERC for more work.
