Plans canceled for chemical plastics recycling plant in Northeast PA

Chemical plastics recycling company Alterra Energy has canceled plans to build a facility near Hazleton, Pennsylvania.

Alterra, which already operates a similar facility in Akron, Ohio, had planned to build a facility able to process up to 189 million pounds of plastic waste per year using pyrolysis. The process entails melting and vaporizing plastics to produce a synthetic oil that would be used as a raw ingredient to create new plastics, waxes, and other petrochemical products.

However, the company canceled plans on Aug. 8 after a lease arrangement with a local property owner fell through.

The company has faced opposition for the facility’s potential air pollution, among other issues. According to Alterra’s air permit application, the plant could have emitted over 11,000 pounds of hazardous air pollutants annually, along with other dangerous pollutants, like volatile organic compounds and fine particulate matter.
