The state’s Republican-controlled utility commission rejected a natural gas-fired power plant proposed for an Amazon data center, saying the company had not adequately proved consumers would not have to pay for the projects.

Duke Energy had sought a permit for the 250-megawatt facility to primarily serve the $10 billion, 21-building data center near Charlotte, according to Politico. The North Carolina Utilities Commission, which includes three Republicans and two Democrats, referenced a voluntary agreement the Trump Administration negotiated with AI companies to bear the cost of their facilities’ immense electricity needs.

With dozens of large-scale AI data centers and associated power plants proposed across the country, political leaders of both major parties are facing backlash from constituents opposed to these projects.

William Brawley, Tommy Tucker, and Donald van der Vaart, the commission’s three Republican members, said Duke failed to explain how it would “adhere to its commitments under the Ratepayer Protection Pledge,” according to Politico.
