The tech industry’s rush to build more natural gas power plants for data centers for artificial intelligence has contributed to a steep rise in the cost to build these plants, according to a recent report.
BloombergNEF reported in April that the cost to build a natural gas-fired power plant has increased 66 percent, rising from $1,500 per kilowatt generated in 2023 to $2,157 last year. The time to complete a facility has also increased by 23 percent, according to TechCrunch’s coverage of the report.
The demand has led to a backlog for manufacturers of natural gas turbines, with manufacturers over 90 percent booked through 2028, according to investment bank Jeffries.
