The government of Ascension Parish is planning a relocation and buyout for residents along the Mississippi River to make room for a steel plant and multiple ammonia production facilities.
On Aug. 11, the local government announced it is accepting proposals from firms to lead the buyout program to make way for the proposed RiverPark Megaplex on 17,000 acres.
If successful, they plan to make room for a proposed Hyundai Motor Group steel plant that could produce up to 2.7 million metric tons of steel per year. State officials have confirmed that tax breaks for the project would cost taxpayers nearly $600 million.
The site could also host the Ascension Clean Energy Facility, planned by a subsidiary of ExxonMobil and shipping companies Hafnia and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. It could also host fertilizer company CF Industries’ Blue Point ammonia complex. Both would make ammonia using natural gas.
