Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is encountering opposition from Louisiana republican lawmakers, a group that is typically favorable to oil and gas industry interests, according to Floodlight News. Approximately 30 CCS projects are proposed in Louisiana and lawmakers are starting to face pushback from homeowners across the state.
Chairman of Louisiana’s Senate Natural Resources Committee,Sen. Bob Hensgens, said there are 12 bills working through the state House,“which aren’t very friendly” to CCS. Two notable bills include HB396, which would completely outlaw CCS in Louisiana, and HB522, which would put a year-long moratorium on CCS until proper studies are conducted.
Louisiana is one of three states with full authority from the federal government – known as primacy –to approve CCS projects in their state, the other two states being North Dakota and Wyoming.
The oil and gas industry’s interest in CCS mainly stems from billions of dollars in tax subsidies for enhanced oil recovery.
