In retaliation against Trump, China slaps tariffs on U.S. fuel exports

In response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese products, China immediately responded with a 15 percent tariff on U.S. liquified natural gas (LNG), among other U.S. imports.

Driven by booming production from shale reserves, the U.S. has become the world’s largest LNG exporter and among the largest exporters of crude oil. China is a major buyer of U.S. LNG, serving as the market for nearly 6 percent of U.S. LNG exports, according to Reuters.

China also put in place a 15 percent tariff on U.S. coal and 10 percent tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-engine cars, according to the Associated Press. The tariffs would take effect Feb. 10.
