Greenland counters Trump claim that ‘massive’ oil and gas extraction is coming soon

A representative of Greenland in the Danish parliament brushed off President Donald Trump’s statement this week that vast amounts of new oil, gas, and mineral extraction are about to begin.

Following a campaign event in Alaska on Tuesday, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that “Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!”

What Trump meant by “our” is unclear – the U.S. has a military base on Greenland but does not own or control the self-governing territory of Denmark, a NATO ally. Naaja H. Nathanielsen, who represents Greenland in Denmark’s parliament, told the Associated Press that any new resource extraction on the island would take years.

“There’s no Greenlandic barrels of oil on ground in any near future,” Nathanielsen told the AP.

Prices for diesel and other refined fuels have reached record highs due mainly to military strikes on refineries in the Middle East and Russia, affecting farmers, the shipping industry, with expectations that the price on other consumer goods will continue to go up.

Nathanielsen told the AP that she thought Trump’s post was intended as a message for Americans ahead of the upcoming midterms. High fuel prices due to Trump’s war with Iran have become a focal point of the elections.

“This is just the way the president decides to engage,” Nathanielsen said. “I think we have all come to expect something like that.”
