Fuel tanker traffic through Strait of Hormuz increased last week

Ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz more than doubled last week compared to the previous week, with traffic including three oil supertankers heading to Asia.

The number of vessels crossing through the narrow entrance to the Persian Gulf increased to 54 the week of May 11 to 17 compared to 23 the previous week, according to data from U.K. shipping journal Lloyd’s List.

Ship traffic through the strait has been severely restricted since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28, with the bottleneck leading to rising global fuel prices.

The vessels that passed through the strait last week included 10 China-owned ships and a liquified natural gas carrier owned by the state-owned oil company of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, according to Drop Site News. Two carriers loaded with liquified petroleum gas also transited the Gulf, bound for India, the outlet reported.
