Federal regulators are making it easier for developers of polluting facilities to start building before they receive air quality permits.
Under a new interpretation of the EPA’s New Source Review program announced earlier this month, work can begin on new plants that are still awaiting permits as long as the construction does not include units that emit air pollution, according to E&E News.
The change will likely benefit developers of natural gas-fired power plants hoping to cash on rising power demand for artificial intelligence. In a July opinion piece on Fox News previewing the new policy, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said the change would be needed to “make America the AI capital of the world.”
