The operator of a facility in Licking County that uses heat, pressure, and chemicals to break down plastic waste has notified Ohio regulators it plans to suspend operations.
Freepoint Eco-Systems, which uses a controversial technology called pyrolysis, notified the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency on May 28 that it would stop processing plastic waste. The agency had issued five notices of violation to the facility and was “actively pursuing enforcement orders,” according to advocacy groups.
“Suspending operations will ensure an end to the harmful pollution caused by burning plastic waste, bringing long-overdue relief to nearby families,” said Amanda Rowoldt, Ohio field organizer for Moms Clean Air Force. “Children in the community will finally be able to play outside without the threat of breathing dirty, contaminated air.”
