The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a hearing next month on a proposal to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) and inject it belowground in rural West Texas.
On Sept. 3, 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) scheduled public hearings regarding draft permits for three carbon injection wells for Stratos, a direct air capture facility in Ector County.
The facility, planned by a subsidiary of oil company Occidental and backed by private equity and investment company BlackRock, is expected to be operational in 2025. Developers plan to capture up to 500,000 metric tons of CO2 per year. The captured carbon would be injected into underground formations, with carbon removal credits sold to companies looking to offset their emissions, according to the developers.
Comments will be accepted here until Oct. 7, 2024. Public hearings will be held on Oct. 3, 2024 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Central at the MCM Elegante Hotel in Odessa, Texas. Please see the public notice for more information
