Energy Transfer plans 708 miles of new pipeline to move gas from TX to AZ

Energy Transfer, one of the largest pipeline companies in the U.S., is planning a $5.6 billion pipeline across much of the desert Southwest to ship gas from West Texas to the Phoenix area.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) will hold a series of meetings through early August on the potential environmental impacts of Energy Transfer’s proposed Desert Southwest Expansion Project. The project would entail building 708 miles of pipeline and nine compressor stations in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

The pipeline would be able to transport up to 2.3 billion cubic feet per of natural gas per day from the Permian Basin to the Phoenix area in Arizona. One of the project's main customers, Arizona Public Service, plans to use natural gas from the pipeline for gas-fired power plants that will support proposed data centers.

FERC is accepting comments on the proposed project until August 8. The agency will also hold several in-person and virtual public meetings:
