Despite federal shutdown, Trump’s fossil fuel agenda moves forward

Even with federal agencies in shutdown mode, the administration will continue issuing permits for oil drilling, while halting activity on some renewable energy projects.

Bloomberg News reported last week that the Interior Department will keep processing permits for new oil and gas projects and coal leases, even as it furloughs thousands of workers during the shutdown that began Oct. 1. Workers are still processing oil and gas leases sales in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska.

However, the department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will stop working on offshore renewable energy projects, according to the news outlet. The bureau expects to furlough over 70 percent of its workforce during the shutdown.

The Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council, created by Congress in 2015 to streamline permitting of major infrastructure projects, met on Oct. 1, the first day of the shutdown, according to Inside EPA.

The council’s director said it had identified funding to proceed with permitting for dozens of projects on the so-called FAST-41 list, including multiple pipelines, liquified natural gas projects, and other energy projects.
