Department of Transportation proposes strengthening safety standards for CO2 pipelines

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has proposed new rules for pipelines transporting carbon dioxide (CO2).

The proposal covers carbon dioxide in liquid and gaseous forms and would apply to existing pipelines being converted to transport CO2. Such pipelines are intended to serve carbon capture and sequestration facilities meant to keep CO2 from industry out of the atmosphere and stop it from warming the climate.

The rules would for the first time establish design, installation, operation, maintenance and reporting requirements for CO2 pipelines, according to the Department of Transportation. They would also require alarm systems and training for emergency responders.

The public has 60 days to provide comments on the proposed rulemaking.
