In a 6-1 ruling, the Michigan Supreme Court ordered Canadian energy company Enbridge to redo its environmental review for the proposed Line 5 pipeline project that would run through the Straits of Mackinac, as reported by E&E News. Enbridge plans to replace the existing four-mile section of the Line 5 pipeline system that has been in place since 1953.

The Michigan Public Service Commission previously approved the project, but the court found that the commission did not adequately consider whether prolonging the lifetime of the pipeline system would cause future environmental impacts. The court also took issue with the commission’s decision to improperly deny the use of evidence on the current state of the original Line 5 section in the Straits of Mackinac.

Concerns about a major oil spill affecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron have grown in recent years after Enbridge admitted in 2017 that it was aware of flaws on the pipeline system’s coating.

The aging Enbridge Line 5 transports light crude oil, light synthetic crude, and natural gas liquids.
