Company may ‘move on’ from plans to build oil export terminal off Texas coast

The CEO of a U.S. pipeline and fuel storage company says it may not move forward with plans to build a new crude oil export terminal off the Texas coast.

Enterprise Products Partners has received the permits it needs to build and operate the Sea Port Oil Terminal about 35 miles offshore from Freeport, Texas. However, in an earnings call Tuesday, CEO Jim Teague said the company has not yet received enough specifics from potential customers, according to Reuters.

“If we can’t achieve these within a reasonable amount of time, we will move on,” Teague said in the call.

The terminal would be supplied from a pipeline connection to Enterprise’s proposed Oyster Creek crude oil terminal about 10 miles inland.

Environmental groups and residents have opposed the terminal because of risks of spills into the Gulf of Mexico and plans for more than 50 miles of new onshore and offshore pipelines, including a segment that would cross through Surfside Beach, a popular beach for swimming and fishing.
