The rush to develop sequestration projects in Louisiana continues with two more test wells for projects intended to store carbon dioxide produced from nearby heavy industry.
On August 20, 2024, Onstream CO2 applied to drill a test well in St. Mary Parish, southeast of Lafayette, where the company is developing a carbon sequestration hub.
These test wells are often used to gather geotechnical information for storage projects meant to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) from industry rather than allowing it to be released to the atmosphere and contribute to climate change. The St. Mary Parish site has the estimated storage capacity to hold between 75 to 100 million metric tons of CO2.
Onstream CO2, a joint venture between Castex Carbon Solutions and Carbonvert, is also behind the Cameron Parish CO2 Hub, also known as the GeoDura Carbon Storage Hub, in Southwest Louisiana.
Also, on Aug. 27, 2024, Lapis Energy applied to drill a test well in St. Charles Parish for the Libra Sequestration Hub. The Libra project is a joint venture between Lapis and CO2 production, storage, and transport firm Denbury, recently acquired by ExxonMobil. The project is expected to sequester 5-10 million metric tons of CO2 per year.
