Artificial intelligence company OpenAI, which requires massive amounts of energy for its data centers, has hired an official from President Donald Trump’s first administration who championed natural gas.
DeSmog reported Monday that OpenAI hired John McCarrick as its head of global energy policy. McCarrick was a senior energy policy advisor for Trump who promoted U.S. exports of liquified natural gas and pushed for European and Asian countries to purchase it.
The U.S. is seeing a wave of new proposals for natural gas-fired power generators to supply electricity to data centers as part of the global race to develop AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously said that the future of powering AI “probably looks more like natural gas,” according to DeSmog.
Before working for the Trump administration, McCarrick served as an energy advisor for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign and in a similar role for GOP Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008.
