California sues Trump Administration for pulling $1.2 billion in hydrogen funds

The state sued the administration this week over a decision to withdraw funds from the state's hydrogen hub, one of several planned under former president Biden.

The lawsuit by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, joined by the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development and the California Energy Commission, challenge's the administration's removal of funds for the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy System, according to a Wednesday news release.

The proposal involves building out a system of hydrogen production facilities, fueling stations, and end users, such as transit systems. It involved blending hydrogen with natural gas at power plants before an eventual transition to "100% clean hydrogen," according to a Department of Energy factsheet.

“The president claims to seek ‘American Energy Dominance’ but, in California, his unlawful termination of over $1.2 billion in total funding for crucial clean energy projects means over 200,000 union job cuts, rising energy prices, and higher rates of pollution that wreak havoc on our health,” Bonta said in the news release.
