After tie vote, Colorado town narrowly approves sale of oil and gas drilling rights

After a deadlocked vote last week on a proposal in Erie, Colorado, to sell the town’s mineral rights for drilling, council members narrowly approved the deal on Tuesday.

Following more than two hours of public comment, council members voted 4-3 to allow Erie, about a half hour east of Boulder, to sell about 182 acres of its underground mineral rights to SM Energy. The company is proposing to drill horizontal wells underneath homes in Erie, according to KUNC News.

In return, officials told KUNC News the town will get a 3 share of the proceeds from its production, a cash payment of $4.5 million, and nearly 160 acres of land. SM Energy will also plug 17 abandoned wells and allow town officials to inspect drilling operations at the Draco Pad.
